Why iPhone 3G is Actually MORE than the Actual Model
Ok, after hearing the beautiful price $199 for the 8gb model I thought to myself “It’s to good to be true”. So I started researching and realized that AT&T is raising the cost of iPhone data plans from $20/month to $30/month. Now, your probably saying “Oh, it’s just a ten dollar difference” but guess what? you still have to sign a two-year contract for voice and data to get iPhone 3G unless some genius hacks it aka jailsbreak it. Your going to pay $10/month extra for the mandatory new data plan over a minimum of 24 months. When you add that up that’s $240 extra over the life of the contract.
Apple is also dropping the price of the phone itself from $399 to $199 for the 8gb model and $499 to $299 for the 16g version. So your net cost of phone plus two years of service will be $40 more than the original iPhone. Who cares though? I think it’s worth the extra $40 because of its integrated GPS and 3G. I would guess nobody would choose the slow EDGE data but lets see what’s the outcome.
